By Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antivirus (or anti-virus) software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including computer viruses, worms, and trojan horses. Such programs may also prevent and remove adware, spyware, and other forms of malware.

A variety of strategies are typically employed. Signature-based detection involves searching for known malicious patterns in executable code. However, it is possible for a user to be infected with new malware in which no signature exists yet. To counter such so called zero-day threats, heuristics can be used. One type of heuristic approach, generic signatures, can identify new viruses or variants of existing viruses for looking for known malicious code (or slight variations of such code) in files. Some antivirus software can also predict what a file will do if opened/run by emulating it in a sandbox and analyzing what it does to see if it performs any malicious actions. If it does, this could mean the file is malicious.

However, no matter how useful antivirus software is, it can sometimes have drawbacks. Antivirus software can degrade computer performance if it is not designed efficiently. Inexperienced users may have trouble understanding the prompts and decisions that antivirus software presents them with. An incorrect decision may lead to a security breach. If the antivirus software employs heuristic detection (of any kind), the success of it is going to depend on whether it achieves the right balance between false positives and false negatives. False positives can be as destructive as false negatives. In one case, a faulty virus signature issued by Symantec mistakenly removed essential operating system files, leaving thousands of PCs unable to boot.[1] Finally, antivirus software generally runs at the highly trusted kernel level of the operating system, creating a potential avenue of attack.[2]

In addition to the drawbacks mentioned above, the effectiveness of antivirus software has also been researched and debated. One study found that the detection success of major antivirus software dropped over a one-year period.[3]

You already know that you need an antivirus software to guard your PC. But to decide which product is best for you is a whole different matter. Among so many alternatives being offered all with perplexing technical information, you need to be alert not to fall for the useless one. In order for you to do some effective comparison, here I list all the main features you should look for when doing an antivirus software comparison.
1. Effectiveness Figure out how effective the software you are considering is by checking out the latest antivirus software reviews in the online or offline PC press. You need to know what kind of threat it can protect you from.
2. User friendly (Easy to use) See whether the product provides an easy to use interface and also whether it comes with a manual or user guide. This is one of mostly-considered factors when carrying out an antivirus software comparison.
3. Virus definition and scanning engine updates As new viruses are identified, an update in its database of viruses is required for an antivirus software. Check if the software can perform regular update automatically.
4. Technical support Find out what kind of supporting services it provides, such as a live chat service, a call center, etc.

If you use any online search engine to find the best antivirus software removal you will be bombarded with thousands of listings promising that by using 'x' software you can safely and effectively remove viruses, spyware, and any other damaging software from your computer.
Many of these sites are legit software options, but, be careful when downloading anything onto your computer. The worst thing to happen is to download antivirus solutions only to find out that the downloaded file in fact is yet another virus.
I have run into this problem in the past. I had a horrible virus on my computer and my current antivirus protection was not detecting it. Because it did not detect the virus, it could not remove it. So, I did an internet search and found what I thought was the answer to my antivirus prayers. After downloading the software I immediately learned that I had made a horrible mistake. What I thought was antivirus removal software to fix my problems was in fact another virus. So, there I was with 2 horrible viruses wreaking havoc on my computer.
To avoid this problem you should always research what you are downloading. Had I done a complete search and reviewed several different antivirus removal software I would have found that the software I was downloading was dangerous. I could have saved myself a lot of time and heartache.
Before downloading any antivirus software removal programs you should investigate the site and read any and all reviews you can find on the software before putting it on your computer.

Computer Virus Protection Reviews - The Best in Computer Virus Protection

Antivirus Software Reviews

By Jim Marshall

With many options available it can be rather difficult to select computer virus protection. Without being an expert in computer security how can we decide which antivirus software is better than another? It is actually a lot easier than you think. These are the most important features to look for that separate the best from the rest.

• Full registry scanning. Unfortunately a lot of antivirus programs are unable to perform deep scans of your registry files. This may have been acceptable years ago when viruses were not quite as devious. But the latest and deadliest threats such as XP Antivirus, Vundo, and Antispyware Master all install dangerous files in your registry. You can delete almost all the malicious strains of a deadly virus but if you neglect the registry it will simply regenerate itself.

• Real time protection. Detection and removal is simply not enough. You need real time computer virus protection. Often time viruses can sneak on your computer or disguise themselves as benign files. Good real time protection should severely limit the amount of viruses infecting your computer.

• Constant software updates. Antivirus protection software is only as good as it's last update. New deadly viruses are created every day and unless your antivirus program is staying on top of them then your computer is still at risk!

Deadly viruses can potentially corrupt your computer and cause a complete hard drive collapse. They also use keyloggers and spyware to steal private information like credit card numbers and passwords. You cannot afford to let this deadly malware run amuck.

For computer virus protection reviews that highlight which software has these features and more please visit the website below.

Antivirus Software For Vista

Antivirus Software Reviews

By Stephen Mulberry

Windows Vista promises to have enhanced security against internet related threats. One of the most talked about addition is UAC (User Access Control), which attempts to automatically sense potentially dangerous situations and temporarily suspends running programs and processes. UAC works by detecting and halting any malware that may be trying to install itself on the machine or run itself with administrative privileges. UAC will prompt/warn you when something attempts to install itself. Unfortunately this is not an end-all solution. Some viruses or malware have the ability to automatically click 'OK' or 'Yes' on these warnings allowing the virus to proceed with it's self installation. Also, it may be difficult to determine whether or not the warning is coming from a legitimate source. And, finally, some people have been 'conditioned' to click 'Yes' or 'OK' to simply get rid of the annoying, invasive, warning window and get back to what they are doing. Some other built-in security features include Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. However, depend upon these features without third-party antivirus software at your own risk. Although these built-in features help to some degree, they are not foolproof, and in addition to the the reasons above, there are many reasons to use separate third-party antivirus software. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Email attachments - there are millions of virus infected emails currently in circulation and to the uneducated user, these emails appear completely legitimate and persuasive in getting you to open the attachment. A well written virus by a competent programmer will exploit the weaknesses an any operating system. If you are one of the unfortunate victims, prepare for some serious headaches.

2. P2P downloads - Peer to peer, and other file sharing programs, are some of the most common ways for computer viruses to spread. Viruses hidden in seemingly legitimate installation packages will make there way into your computer faster than you can say - "Woops".

3. Browser related exploits - Vista's new version of Internet Exploerer (IE 7) claims to have enhanced security features such as pre-enabled Active-X protection, and a Protected Mode. However, many users will undoubtedly disable these features in order to be able to run flash programs, or other embedded applications which require Active-X. And as for executing unknown ActiveX components - it's been permitted before, and it will continue to be permitted.

Although Windows Vista is the most secure Windows operating system to date, there are still many ways for viruses to make their way through Vista's defenses. We strongly recommend, especially if you use the internet frequently, that you install a reliable antivirus program. Antivirus software is designed specifically to solve all of the problems I've discussed and more. A good antivirus software will also regularly self update, protecting against the latest virus and malware threats. Let Vista focus on being an operating system and let your antivirus software focus on blocking and removing viruses. Surely you've heard the maxim 'You're better safe than sorry'. Well, it certainly applies here as well.

Free Virus Protection Software - How To Protect Your Computer From Viruses

Antivirus Software Reviews

By Jimmy Henderson

If you want to find the best free virus protection software, you have definitely come to the right place. Very simply, there are many websites that offer this today, but you want to make sure you find software that is effective at eliminating the viruses. Get this wrong, and your computer is doomed.

First of all, here is a quick explanation of exactly what a virus is and why it's so important to ensure you keep them off your operating system and then some antivirus reviews to help you find the best. While there isn't room to go into the 10 best antivirus programs, as many people want, there is a recommendation for which software is the best.

Very simply, a computer virus is essentially something that uses real programs and feed off of them. They generally begin working right away and are built specifically to destroy computer files, programs, etc. Generally speaking, you are most at risk for receiving viruses whenever downloading a piece of software of the internet, so you obviously need to be very careful about where you download from.

Of course, even if you are as careful as you can possibly be, you still are at risk of having your computer infected. Even opening up certain emails can give your computer a virus.

While you certainly need to be careful and diligent about which sites you visit and which emails you open, no amount of caution should substitute for getting good free virus protection software. Very simply, your computer depends on it.

So where should you get your anti virus software from? Why not go to the leading internet search company around-Google?

Very recently, they introduced something called the Google Pack, which contains more than ten different and free software applications, including anti virus software. This software obviously isn't designed by Google, but they get them from a top notch anti virus company.

Included in this is the Norton AntiVirus software, which is one of the top anti virus software applications anywhere. When you get the Google Pack, you get this for free. Whenever it's been tested by experts, it always performs admirably at protecting operating systems.

Obviously, there are many great anti virus software applications you can get for free, but you can be assured that the Norton is among the best, and having it backed by Google gives it a further stamp of approval. Therefore, I'd recommend trusting your computer to this application, as it's simply one of the best free virus protection software packages around.

Computer Antivirus Software - 6 Tips to Help Select the Right Solution

Antivirus Software Reviews

By Gary Scott

There are so many computer antivirus software products available today that sometimes it is hard to know where to start. The goal with this article is to provide you with a framework to judge whether a computer antivirus software will be good for you.

(1) Effective detection of viruses– obvious point but you need to fell confident that your software will catch a vast majority of the virus threats including worms and Trojans. Visit online websites like PC World or CNet for trusted reviews.

(2) Value for money – a lot of the software vendors offer internet security suites which offer the anti virus software with other security tools including firewall software and spam filters. Typically these all-in-one packages offer better value for money than buying a standalone anti virus software. At a minimum it is important to consider buying a package which includes a decent firewall which monitors both incoming and outgoing internet traffic in your computer. The standard Windows XP firewall only monitors incoming traffic.

(3) Virus Definition update – the best computer antivirus software offers automatic updates which ensure the best protection for your computer. New virus threats emerge almost daily so it is critical your antivirus software's virus definition database is refreshed frequently.

(4) User Interface – needs to be easy to use so that you can configure the required setting without requiring any technical knowledge. It also needs to convey information in plain English for the home user with easy-to-follow instructions.

(5) Integrates with Windows XP Security Centre – this allows you to make the most of a useful feature of your operating system. The Security Centre monitors the security software on your computer to make sure it is working properly. The last thing you want is continuous error messages from Windows.

(6) Technical Support – this is really important. The best packages offer free technical support. You will be surprised how many vendors actually charge for this – sometimes the charges per incident can be very high.

Please see below for my computer antivirus software recommendation.

Gary Scott runs a number of computer related sites. He recommends the The Shield Pro which provides affordable virus protection with free technical support and firewall software included.

How Free Antivirus Software Can Work For You

Antivirus Software Reviews

By Scott Jarvis

When I first made the transition from private internet user to business internet user there where many things I, at first had never taken into consideration. First and foremost however was Computer Security. My business is based and run out my home and while I use my four computers for business they are also used as personal computers as well by both myself and my family.

I keep all of my clients business and personal information on file as well as credit card numbers, home address and the like. Being somewhat naïve to the world of cyber crime prior to the start of my online business I lacked the knowledge and know how's when it came to things like zero day attacks, viruses, and to the same extent the effects of spyware and malware. It wasn't until I encountered a serious problem that I was forced into the world of PC Security Software.

I like most people prior to my incident had made use of products like Norton and MacAfee to keep my computers free from viruses and other nasties. Knowing what I know now, those applications do their jobs but can be difficult to understand for the layman. As I found as time passed I had no idea what I was doing with those applications and would simply run scans and remove the threats they would find. I knew nothing of the Security Management tools that where included and when I finally did find out about them I couldn't figure out how to utilize them.

So what incident finally forced me to educate myself and begin protecting my clients and my business? Well as I stated previously my computers are also used by my family for leisure. During those early months of the business my youngest child who was 11 at the time was browsing through sites that were designed to implant viruses and allow spyware to run rampant through my home network. For a time I didn't even know that there were any problems. That is until I got a call from a client who explained that he was getting both mail and email from unwanted solicitors whom he believed I had sold his information too. I ended up spending a weeks worth of time on the phone with this person and eventually we got things sorted out. I immediately began speaking to others who operated businesses out of their homes and found surprisingly that I had been a victim of data theft. After a great deal of consulting with others I began my hunt for a reliable PC Security application.

My initial results through the early stages of my search warranted results I found both disheartening and disappointing. I first looked at and sampled several Free Antivirus Software programs none of which was the "complete" package. I was advised to find an application that would not only locate 100% of the threats throughout my network but one that would also keep those threats out. I was also looking for a program that would allow me to do it all in one fell swoop and one that was fairly easy to use and understand too. Unfortunately for me my early searches generated poor results. What I found surprising too was that most of the early programs I had sampled where popular programs that many other business where making use of.

It wasn't until roughly three weeks into my search that I found a company called eEye, whom specializes in things like PC Protection and Security Management software. After reading through their product descriptions I immediately began reading reviews of their products and asking those I did business with what their opinion of eEye was. I was happy to hear that there was an overwhelming majority in favor of their Endpoint Security programs. Luckily for me they offer a free download of their "Blink Personal Edition" antivirus application. There's nothing more pleasant than expecting something average and ending up with something that's a superior product. Not only did I not have to pay to take this program for a test drive but the program had everything I was on the hunt for. As I'm not the most tech savvy individual using such programs usually present a number of challenges for me but not eEye's programs. I was able to install it and begin using it with ease. Right off the bat it found all of the infections my youngest child had brought into the computer and immediately after the scan completed and threats where removed, I set up, with ease the intrusion prevention tools that have since kept 99% of all threats off of my computers and out of my business.

Things have been running smoothly for over six months now and I no longer worry about things like data file theft and the like because the back door programs that allow individuals to engage in such unscrupulous activities can no longer find their way into my machines.
